Am I suitable for dermal filler treatments?
Dermal filler treatments are suitable for both male and female patients. They are used for a variety of concerns including to treat age-related volume loss, improve definition, enhance your lips and to improve facial proportions. Tear trough fillers are a treatment only given by highly-skilled practitioners to rejuvenate tired-looking eyes. In expert hands, dermal fillers can also provide a subtle lifting effect to reverse age-related descent of facial tissues.
If you are over 18, you are suitable for dermal filler treatments. Occasionally, some people who seek dermal filler treatments may actually not be suitable, and may require a different treatment (including other non-surgical rejuvenation procedures such as anti-wrinkle treatments or TIXEL skin resurfacing). As a plastic surgeon, Dr Kian can also advise on whether you may be more suitable for surgical techniques such as a blepharoplasty, mini-facelift or face/necklift. During your consultation, you will be advised on whether dermal filler treatments are suitable for you.
What will the consultation involve?
At your consultation, you will meet Dr Kian, a fully-qualified plastic surgeon who is trained in both non-surgical and surgical aesthetic treatments. He will take a full medical history including details of previous aesthetic treatments, medications, allergies and smoking. Dr Kian also always takes time to understand what your goals and concerns are.
During your examination, the following will be assessed systematically and standard clinical photographs will be taken for your medical record:

What are the contraindications for dermal filler treatments?
You are not suitable for dermal filler treatments if you:
- have an active inflammatory skin condition or skin infection (including cold sores)
- have an allergy or hypersensitivity to lidocaine (local anaesthetic contained in the filler)
- have an autoimmune condition
- are pregnant or breastfeeding.
When will I be able to see my results?
Results are usually immediate. There may be a small amount of swelling that will take a few days to settle down.
How long do the results last?
Dr Kian usually uses the long-lasting Juvederm^® VYCROSS range (Volite, Volbella, Volift, Voluma & Volux). These fillers usually last between 9-18 months. Repeat or top-up treatments are usually required when they wear off. However, there is individual variation for this and it also depends on the area treated.
What are the risks/complications?
Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in your skin. Its ability to be naturally broken down by your body over time and reversed if needed makes it a safe treatment in expert hands. However, it is important to choose a skilled practitioner to deliver these treatments to minimise the risk of complications. During your consultation, Dr Kian will explain the potential risks and complications of your procedure.
Common side effects are redness and swelling at the injection points that can take a few hours to a few days to settle down. Occasionally, bruising can occur and this can take a few days to a few weeks to resolve. Rarer complications include lumps, allergic reaction and vascular compromise (blockage of blood vessels leading to tissue necrosis and blindness in extremely rare circumstances).
Dr Kian has had advanced training in dermal fillers and takes steps to reduce the risk of adverse effects. He also only uses hyaluronic acid fillers which are reversible and from a reputable brand.
How long is the recovery time?
Dermal filler treatments are generally a treatment with little to no downtime. However there are certain activities that you should avoid after your treatment. In the first 48 hours after treatment, you should avoid:
- make-up and active skincare products
- strenuous exercise
- saunas & steam rooms
- alcohol
- direct sunlight & sunbeds

Dermal filler treatments are usually performed in the clinic. The dermal fillers that Dr Kian uses contain lidocaine, which is a local anaesthetic. There is usually minimal discomfort so topical anaesthetic is not normally required, but can be provided if requested.
